Medium Wave (AM) Band Loggings from LSC 2014 - 2020

I lived in LSC for six and half years, and occasionally got to do some DXing from there.

My main DX radio had been a Sony SRF-M37V walkman plus a Radio Shack 15-1853 tunable AM band loop antenna. However, the SRF-M37V finally died on me and I was unable to resurrect it. I resorted to an SDRPlay RSP1 and SDRuno and an approx 50 ft. end-fed wire antenna up about 20 feet with a 9:1 transformer, with RG59 coax connected back into the RSP. Not ideal but it worked. Also, my later logs are not in chronological order, because I had started recording the whole AM band with SDRuno across the TOH, and replaying it at a more reasonable hour to see what I can dig out after the fact.

Although I no longer live in LSC, I continue to add loggings because I had made several band recordings in February 2020 which I can play back now as I have time, and listen for stations I hadn't previously logged.

Nacional outlets on this frequency are LRA3 Santa Rosa, La Pampa (25kW/2.5kW, LU23 Lago Argentino, Santa Cruz (25kW/1kW) and LRA27 Catamarca (25kW/3kW). Can't tell which one I'm hearing. Transmitter drifted from 1319.990 kHz down to 1319.715 kHz over the course of 20 minutes. Caught at morning sign on with Argentina NA, then ID announcements. 560	LRA13	ARGArgentina	BA	Bahía Blanca - 10 Aug 2014 1800 - R. Nacional -- With news items, finishing up with "La Argentina está informada... por La Radio Pública", No definitive ID, but R. Nacional uses the slogan, "La Radio Pública." There are 3 R. Nacional outlets on this frequency, so hard to tell which one it is without a local ID. 1620	LRI309	ARGArgentina	BA	Mar del Plata - 08 Feb 2020 0008z - R. Mar del Plata - Co-channel interference from R. Mitre makes it really tough to dig out any identifying information on this one. But going over my SDR recordings from Feb 2020 I was able to find a short segment that's just barely discernible but enough to positively ID the station. I heard the ending of "Palabras Palabras" (probably the Silvana di Lorenzo version, but hard to tell), then the ID announcement interspersed with some music, then into another song. Finally found this fairly clear ID from a recording on Feb 10 at 5 minutes past local midnight. A singing jingle, ID announcement "Estás escuchando LU6 Radio Atlantica siete sesenta AM desde Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina," then into the national anthem. 1460		ARGArgentina	BA	San Antonio de Padua - 20 Sep 2019 0305z - R. Contacto -- from review of an I/Q recording (18 Mar 2022). Playing AR national anthem across TOH amid heavy co-channel interference, including stations on frequency and off frequency on both sides. After NA, some announcements by a woman, then a man who gave the ID, "Donde la ciudad y el campo se amalgaman, nace(??), Radio Contacto AM mil-cuatro-sesenta. Desde San Antonio de Padua..." 530	--	ARGArgentina	CA	Buenos Aires - 12 Aug 2019 0050 - Somos R. -- Formerly, R. Madre was here, but either the station changed hands or it was shut down and a new station and transmitter built. Whichever the case, the signal is much stronger now. Current format is pop music. Wikipedia says the station started broadcasting 9 Apr 2018. (Here's an [audio clip] recorded 03 Feb 2020 @0500z) 1kW according to MWLIST, but seems stronger than that. Information on the Argentina AM/FM Facebook group indicates this is a different transmitter at a different location than the one used by R. Madre (RSP1/SDRuno) (New - #109)

Weak signal, hard to understand, but the "Radio Madre... enciende America Latina" announcement was quite clear. [Audio clip]. Also, it is beating against something else on the channel. Wonder what that could be? Only thing I can think of that's on 530 is Cuba which is very far away from here, or the Falkland Islands which are supposed to be off the air at this time of night. 3kW, M37V Here is an article [click here] from 2005 explaining about how the station is illegal. But see the info below that indicates that it was eventually given permission to operate (though no call letters seem to have been issued). Here's some interesting historical info from a facebook group, posted 15 Oct 2017: [Original here]: Desde hace meses RADIO MADRE (AM 530 KHz), la estación de Amplitud Modulada operada Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo, se encuentra “fuera del aire por reformas edilicias y técnicas”, según informa la propia emisora a través de su página de Facebook. Esta emisora comenzó sus transmisiones el 16 de Noviembre de 2005, identificándose como “AM 530 La Voz de las Madres”. Quite a jumble on the channel but briefly heard an ID for "AM mil-quatro-veinte..." which is apparently the distinctive announcement of this station according to experienced DXers familiar with the Argentina radio scene. What I found was there is now a wire strung from the transmitter shack to the tower, attached just above the first set of guy wires. The signal was strong in the vicinity of the tower, so they're using the wire as an antenna for the 1440 signal. Counting this as a new station, since transmitter has moved several miles (RSP1/SDRuno) (New - #88)

Audio quality is very bad (sounds like a telephone held up to the speaker of a radio receiver) with lots of skips and repeats, I guess due to poor digitization between studio and transmitter. It has been off for a couple weeks now, and I had time to go to the transmitter site and investigate. What I found was the ATU box is completely gone and it looks like something was excavated from underneath the concrete pad at base of the tower. Whether the stuff was salvaged by the owner or robbed by thieves, I don't know, but this station will probably not be coming back. A neighborhood of tomas (squatter claims with substandard shacks built) is growing ever larger and has encroached to the point that one of the outer guy wire anchors is now inaccessible. I have to wonder how long it'll be before the tower comes down (whether on purpose or not). It looks very unsafe in its current state. Agricultura, then not IDing at all, and having all kinds of trouble with its signal and audio quality, is now IDing as "Norterama Publicidad" and giving a phone number of 51-2674414. Another ownership change? SUBTEL still thinks it's Agricultura. The station sound pretty good for now, so maybe the new owners know what they are doing. Also, the announcer sounds like the same person that had been doing the announcements for Radio La Serena (the now off-the-air 820 kHz station), so maybe the new owner is the same entity that had the 820 station. ( I can imagine that the 820 station was too much to rehabilitate, so they abandoned it and acquired the 1440 station from the people who were in way over their heads trying to run it....) But now, ownership has apparently changed and is now playing a variety of music and calling itself "Radio La Serena," with frequent IDs and announcements. The call sign CA82B is according to the current SUBTEL list, references elswhere on the Internet have CA82A. SUBTEL hasn't updated the ownership information, which was out of date even before this change. The station sounds good for now, but a visit to the transmitter site shows the antenna is very neglected. The protective wall around the base of the tower is broken and anyone can get in there and climb on the tower. There are weeds and dirt around the base and the base insulator is chipped and looks like it is about to fail.
