Heard today on the car radio with mentions of "Area 102.9" with some weird alternative type music. 102.9 is a reference to their low power FM "translator" K275AO. I am happy to report that the KBOI DX test was easily heard here in Los Alamos despite interference from KLTT Commerce City CO and especially from a 1 kHz tone caused by the high power Radio Rebelde transmitter in Cuba broadcasting on 671 kHz.
Here is the what I heard during the first segment of the DX test:
- Antenna pattern change to non-directional at about 1:07 AM MST, making KBOI audible, where before there wasn't a trace of it to be heard.
- Voice announcement 20 seconds in: "KBOI Boise. We are pausing programming to do some technical maintenance and adjustments. Please stand by. We'll be back shortly."
- 16 upward sweeps spaced about 2.5 seconds apart, starting at 29 seconds.
- Intermittent music starting at about a minute and 8 seconds.
- Morse code "KBOI BOISE IDAHO" 4 times, alternating between a 1 kHz tone and a 700 Hz tone, starting at about 1 minute and 49 seconds. The 1 kHz het from Rebelde made it hard to decode the 1 kHz morse code, but you could tell it was there.
If there was a voice announcement associated with the 2nd segment of the test, I did not hear it:
- Morse code starting at about 1:36 AM MST, same message as before, but repeated only once at each tone.
- 2 upward sweeps
- a collage of pieces of music
- 2 more Morse code IDs
- 5 more sweeps.
- antenna changed back to night pattern making KBOI disappear from my radio.
Also heard after reviewing my 5 hour recording of 670 kHz, a 3rd segment of the DX test! I only heard about 15 seconds worth at about 1:51 AM MST, and it consisted of a Morse code ID on top of some Christmas music ("It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year")

[Audio Clip] Station has a pre-sunrise authorization (PSRA) that allows them to come on the air at 6:00am with 500 watts, and also a post-sunset authorization that allows them to stay on the air after dark for a couple hours at much reduced power -- 236 watts or less, depending on the time of the year and time of day. A mystery test tone is being heard by DXers from coast to coast on this frequency tonight. I can even hear it underneath our local TIS station, so it's apparently a very strong signal. (ST-665) UPDATE: - 29 Nov 2006 - The mystery signal continues into today, with several DXers in the east reporting that it was audible all day long. Consensus of DXers with the ability to determine the approximate direction the signal is coming from seems to be that the signal emanates from DC/VA/NC/TN area, and speculation as to who is responsible is rampant. One hypothesis was shot down when Chris Johnson phoned Kintronic Labs in Bristol TN, and was told, no it's not them doing the testing. Other hypotheses are Lawrence Behr Associates in Greenville NC, and The Military at Fort Meade MD burning in a transmitter before shipping it overseas. Great quote from Brock Whaley: "Thanks to all the DX'ers tuning in, the tone on 1610 just beat Radio Disney in the Arbitron overnights." UPDATE: - 04 Dec 2006 - It has become a little clearer what's going on here. A note from Kent Winrich (who apparently knows or is somehow invloved) posted on some of the DXing groups a couple days ago indicates the signal is for antenna testing purposes:
Date: 01 Dec. 2006
Subject: The real deal on 1610
OK folks, here is what I can give you on the 1610 signal.
First of all it is a legit and approved signal. It is for
antenna testing and is running 10kW on the East Coast. It
is strictly a 1kHz tone. There will be nothing else
transmitted. So you dont need tolook for any FSK.
The 1610 signal is now off the air, but there is more
fun to be had.
Starting this morning (Friday) at 0900 (EST) the antenna
testing will resume on 1020 and will run until 0700 Sunday
morning. The 1020 signal will be shut down Sunday at 0700.
Tuesday look for the signal on 590 at 0900 (EST) and run
until 0700 Friday. Friday will finish the antenna testing.
We would be most interested in any FIM readings you get
including location, date, and time. If you dont have a FIM,
an RS(T) report would be great. Again include date, time,
location and a general report. Any audio reports would be
fun (heck I am a DXer after all)

Speculation now is that these tests are preparation for putting propaganda broadcasts to Cuba on the air when El Maximo finally succumbs...
Since I don't keep up with email very well on the weekends, I missed the 1020 kHz test. Probably would have been covered by KCKN anyway. I will set up to record 590 kHz overnight starting tomorrow, so I may have a shot at that one.

Los Alamos -
22 June 2006
1300 -
While driving today, I pushed the button for 1490 on my car radio and
there was KRSN, running the WaveStation test loop.
I stopped in at the studio to see what's up. I talked to the new owners,
David and Gillian Sutton, who are lifelong residents of Los Alamos.
They told me they have until July 5 to get the radio station back on or
return the license to the FCC. Today, they were trying to get a kill
switch installed at the transmitter site, which the previous owner had
neglected to do. Also, they have installed a "Digital Transfer Line" for
their STL to replace the horrible double-hop microwave link that was
always going out.
Format is to be local programming! Yay! Local interest programs and news
in the mornings and music the rest of the day, plus local high school
sports and county council meetings, etc. They bought a library of 4500
popular songs spanning the fifties through the nineties, and are
interested in any suggestions for programming from the community.
New web site is http://www.krsnam1490.com but there's nothing there yet.
Unfortunately, I forgot to ask about AM stereo, but I assume that didn't
get installed. Next time I visit the studios I'll make a gentle
suggestion...
